Standing strong in front of the Danish flag, famous portrait photographer captures the determination of Danish seamen. Sailors were able to escape to Allied ports after Denmark was overrun.

265. A.J.: 5000 Danish Seamen Sailing on 800,000 Tons of Danish Ships.
Exceptionally well-designed poster shows the evolution of the Danish merchant marine fleet from sailing ships to coal fired steam power and then finally to oil fired marine engines. Many Danish captains and crews escaped to sail for England when Denmark surrendered to the Germans.

266. Carlu: Between the Hammer and the Anvil.
Tough nut to crack. Jean Carlu, a famed French émigré artist, provided it in this hopeful graphic of the allies combining their strengths to provide both the hammer and anvil on which to shatter the swastika, the potent symbol of Nazi power.

267. Isip: The Fighting Filipinos 1943.
A wounded Filipino Scout lobby a grenade at the Japanese invaders. Following the American surrender in May '42, many Filipino troops dispersed into the hills. By Oct. '44, nearly 250,000 guerrillas were fighting.

Soldier bends to offer water to a buddy too weak to hold his own cup. The barbed wire prison enclosure in stark contrast to a mirage of churches hovering in the sky. Rare; issued by the Chief of Chaplains.

269. Hirsch: I Will Trust in my God and the United States of America.
Very rare poster shows prisoners putting their hands together to make a pact that they will be sustained by their faith. Soldier is pictured tracing a Cross and Star of David over an American flag in the dirt of the prison yard. Churches appear on a darkened hill in the background.

270. Treidler: Loose Talk Can Cause This 1942.
Rifle-toting Nazi guard confronts grim American sergeant in a POW camp. The treatment of downed American airmen became significantly worse in German POW camps after the SS took over their administration from the Luftwaffe. Scarce; issued in NYC by British and American Ambulance Corps.
