218. Anon: Fly with the U.S. Navy 1941
.Poster printed just before the Japanese air attack on Pearl Harbor features the very latest Grumman fighter aircraft, an F4F3. Fighters sitting on the tarmac by a seashore, not a carrier deck, indicates a training facility, possibly Pensacola.
The F4F-3 had four machine-guns.

219. Barclay: Untitled 1942.
Sailor is shown adjusting a landing gear as PBY Catalina flying boat lifts off. The Cat was the most widely used flying boat of the war. It was used for anti-submarine patrols, as convoy escorts and was particularly useful for search and rescue missions. PBY Coronados sit on the tarmac in the background.

220. Barclay: Freshman! Sophomores! Now You Can Stay in College and Become a Naval Officer 1942.
Young officer scans the sky as fighters roar overhead and the deck crew blasts away. The artist, a Lt. Commander in the Naval Reserve, was recalled to duty when he was almost 50 to record scenes of naval heroics first hand. He was KIA off the Solomon Islands.

221. Barclay: Cadets for Naval Aviation 1941.
Petty Officer uses hand signals to communicate with pilots on a carrier deck as a fighter pilot climbs into his cockpit. High above, a V formation of fighters gains altitude. Artist was later KIA. The coated paper seen here was a luxury only used for recruiting posters.
Hard to find in really good condition. 42x28 NML $1250.

222. Falter Attack 1942.
Just after the bridge is notified that Japanese vessels have been sighted, a Navy fighter revs up on a carrier’s flight deck. The year this poster was printed victorious U.S. naval aviators reversed the tide of the war in the South Pacific, inflicting irreparable damage to Japan's offensive strength at strategic Midway.

223. Anon: Young Men Between the Ages of 17 and 18 1940.
Pre-war recruiting poster shows a battlewagon steaming ahead surrounded by a halo of stars. Battleships were the pride of the fleet.
Prewar posters printed in relatively small editions of only 10,000. 40x28 NML $285.

224. Barclay: Untitled 1942.
Sailor impaled on the flag after being stabbed int he back with a samurai sword - a not too subtle allegory of the Japanese ‘treachery’ after the unprovoked Pearl Harbor attack.Poster perfectly illustrates the shock of the attack, a shock unmatched until 9/11. Zeman cover.

225. Barclay: Arise Americans 1941.
Barclay pictures a sailor in summer whites leaning into the strenuous task of swabbing 14" deck gun. Poster was issued just 6 months before Pearl Harbor was attacked. Forced into a two front war when Hitler declared war on the United States the day after Pearl Harbor the navy was better prepared than the army.

226. Falter: Remember Last December! 1942.
Recruiting message refers to the December 7th Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, the “day of infamy.” Showing the determination that it will take to win the war after the disaster, a dedicated sailor is ready for anything. Old Glory and Lincoln quote underline his commitment.

Great naval classic pictures a carrier; its deck loaded with fighters, cutting a wide swath through the waves with an escort following close behind. Grumman Avenger torpedo bombers provide additional top cover in a powerful reminder of U.S. naval strength and determination.

By 1943 the Allies were on the offensive everywhere, but the outcome of the war was still unclear. Admirals King, CinC, US Fleet, Ingersoll, CinC, Atlantic Fleet, and Nimitz, CinC Pacific Fleet urge more production.

230. Whitcomb: Another American Naval Victory Stay on the Job Keep ‘em Launching.
Poster from the ‘don’t slow up the ship series’ was designed for display in shipyards to encourage workmen to produce even more ships. Festive scene by popular artist, shows a ship, festooned with colorful flags, about to be sent down the ways.
